The protected area

ROSCI0236 Valea Ierii, as a part of the Natura 2000 network has been issued as a community importance site by Decree of the Ministry of Environment and sustainable development no 1964/2007 regarding protected areas.

The total surface of the protected area has 6.289 ha, according to the Standard Natura 2000 Form, issued in 2016, mainly covered by deciduous forest, coniferous forest ans mixture of the two.

The Management Plan of ROSCI0236 Valea Ierii has been published by the Monitorul Oficial R.A. (the competent authority to carry on the task of publishing the official journal of Romania) Part 1, no. 717 bis, in September, 16 2016 and has been approved by Decree no 1130/2016.

Location

ROSCI0263 Valea Ierii is a part of Gilău-Muntele Mare Mountain Range – Apuseni Mountains, Western Carpathians in North-Western Romania.

Valea Ierii protected area streches out the territory of 2 rural communes in Cluj county: Valea Ierii (33%) and Băișoara (12%). One can easily get to Valea Ieii, 50 km away from Cluj-Napoca city and Turda, which are the most populated cities in Cluj county.

EASIEST ACCESS: from Cluj-Napoca, as starting point, to rural areas as Florești, Luna de Sus, Săvădisla, Lita, Liteni, Băișoara and Moara de Pădure.

EASY ACCES: from Turda, as starting point, to rural areas as Mihai Viteazu, Moldovenești, Buru, Iara and Băișoara.

Landscape

ROSCI0263 Valea Ierii is a part of Gilău-Muntele Mare Mountain Range – Apuseni Mountains, Western Carpathians in North-Western Romania, more specific being located in North-Eastern part of The Apuseni Mountains (Western Carpathians) at its contact to Transylvania Basin.

Highest point of the range is Muntele Mare Mountain (1825,8 m), which is the third place in the Apuseni range, and it is located 4,5 km South Eastern part of the protected area.

Climate

Valea Ierii has the specific climate of a mountain area, generally wet and cold weather.

Geology

Is represented by old crystalline shale.

Pedology

The soil in the area is thin, due to the slopes.

Hidrology

Valea Ierii protected area is locates in Iara river basin, left tributary of Arieșul Mare river, with a total surface of 321 square km and a medium altitude of 957 m ASL.
